Report from Tate Conference

Tate has not yet uploaded a podcast of their recent symposium, Contemporary Art in the Middle East, but there is a nice writeup on the English PEN World Atlas (here’s a report on Day 1, here’s Day 2). I was interested in this excerpt from Day 2:

[Professor Salah Hassan] pointed to a recent essay by Barry Flood (NYU) that draws parallels between the dominant discourse on Middle Eastern art and of the war on terror, both of which seek to reconcile universalist assumptions about humanity with a desire to build bridges that demands the “other” culture must be conceived as different.
